This paper details the findings of a study into workplace training in an Australian provincial city. The study is a pilot for a proposed later examination of workplace training in an Australian country area and of a higher education institution’s capacity to respond to training needs in its region. Managers from a sample of organisations responded to interview questions about the nature and extent of training in their organisation, the value of training to the organisation, evaluation of training, training needs, the Training Guarantee Act, traineeship programs and CBT. The findings are particularly thought-provoking in regard to attitudes to training, particularly of casuals, employment of young people, training needs and understanding of the training reform agenda.
